Cultural Evolution

At UBC I was fortunately enough to be introduced to gene-culture coevolution and cultural evolutionary theory by my colleague Joe Henrich. While I was struggling to get my colleagues in the humanities to acknowledge that our thought and behavior might be influenced by biology (genetics), Joe was trying to get biologists to see the enormous power of culture to reshape that genetic heritage. I’d like to think we met in the middle. Our work on the cultural evolution of religion, the Database of Religious History, and our efforts to get psychologists to take history more seriously are all informed by cultural evolutionary / gene-culture coevolutionary theory.
